How did Tripoli get its name?

I think the name means 'three towns' although this is Greek not Arabic. Did three separate town expand and merge into each other to become modern Tripoli, but why a Greek rather than Arabic name. If I am not much mistaken I think that there is another Tripoli in Lebanon, also Arabic speaking, as well as the better known Tripoli in Libya.
