Inventing/revising/rephrasing a quote help?

I thought of "I never asked you to forget, just to forgive". Not sure if anyone has actually quoted it or not. But I think it'd make some one a nice tattoo or just a plain ol' good quote for some one who's done some one wrong. Anyways, the reason for all this is; I'm not sure if it would be a good tattoo quote being phrased like it is. Since it has "you" in it, it is meant towards someone specific, but if that person in question is no longer in the picture, it could be misinterpreted. So how could I rephrase this and make it more in general instead of being vaguely specific? And please stay on topic, don't veer off talk about how bad, ugly, or how big of a mistake tattoos are.
