Why is the gabrielle giffords thing a big deal?

why is she getting a hero's reception everywhere? I understand that the events that took place were very tragic, and i mean no disrespect for anyone involved. I have trouble understanding how getting shot in the head makes you such a bigh deal. if it were me, no one would care. please explain
